Francisco Gelabert Usle was born in Barcelona in 1953. He began his dance studies at the studio of Ana Maleras. He created his first choreography in 1972, followed the next year by his first solo, entitled 'Acció 0', in partnership with Frederic Amat. After working for two 2 years in New York, where he presented 'My Old Corduroy Suit' at the Kitchen Theatre, he returned to Barcelona and began working with the dancer Lydia Azzopardi. In 1985, they formed their own company, Gelabert-Azzopardi Companyia de Dansa, and presented their first major production 'Desfigurat'. In the late 80s, he created two emblematic works in the history of dance in Spain: 'Requiem' and 'Belmonte'. He has created choreographies for the top dancers on the international stage and has worked with key figures in the performing arts such as Nuria Espert.
